This study was prepared for us by a post-grad psychology intern who worked with us for a 4 month period. It studies various fetishes, and explores the reasons behind them.

It appears that many of the fetishes have some childhood reference, so perhaps our childhood is where fetishes originate.
As children we were helpless individuals and powerless and making mistakes is a natural progression of becoming an adult - this was how you learnt about life and how to develop within it.
However, everyone has to grow up into adulthood and learn to be responsible for oneself, and if you make mistakes you have to take responsibility for your actions and deal with the consequences, and as you grow older you may settle whether it be within the work place or the family and you then have people who are dependent upon you.
However, sometimes and I’m sure this applies to most people, don’t you just want someone else to take the reins and go back to being a child when people looked after you and you didn’t have all this responsibility!
Well, it is perhaps this where most fetishes stem from, the fetish is used as a prop to try and escape, the sexual reference of this prop is what provides the release that is desired.
Everyone needs some sort of release from the stressful times that we live in, and for some sex with their partner which reaches orgasm gives that momentary release where you feel out of control and have that feeling of ecstasy.
However, we’re not all the same, people have different desires, different needs based upon their own personal lives and the social forces placed upon them.
Yes not all of us choose to have a fetish but this doesn’t make those who do abnormal, it’s a coping device, something that everyone needs and as long as the choice of fetish is safe and is not harmful, it’s ok.
We are individuals and what suits one person may not suit another, we are unique, and if you have a fetish or desire one, embrace it because it’s yours!
Balloons aren’t exactly the type of thing most of us would expect to be a fetish.
Yet balloons have a tremendous following among the thousands of people who call themselves looners.
Balloons are a subset of the latex fetish, although most latex types don’t know about balloons and most balloon types don’t realize they’re part of this better-known group.
Latex has all of the elements required for a “classic” fetish: it’s “touchy-feely” in that it feels like human skin; and it’s “smelly” - the unique odour of a balloon, in fact, is one of the most powerful turn-ons for looners.
What balloons have, that plain old latex does not, is the narrative of growth, expansion, tension, pressure and explosion — perfect dramatic symbols for sexual arousal and release. The balloon itself is a perfectly opaque metaphor, flexible enough to suggest breast, cock, body, face without ever limiting itself to one single interpretation. It’s this flexibility and capacity to expand to contain many meanings that makes the balloon such a good fetish object.
For many looners, the primary jolt of sexual arousal comes from the fear/ anticipation / shock of a balloon popping. Looners divide themselves up into occasionally contentious camps around the issue of “to pop or not to pop.” Non-poppers sometimes say that they “just want to give the balloon a chance” whereas for poppers, if the balloon doesn’t pop, neither do they. In quite a few cases, balloon popping is imagined within the context of a dominance and submission scenario — the looner might imagine him- or herself tied down and subjected to popping by a powerful, fearless partner. Some looners report having a childhood phobia of loud noises which developed in the case of balloon into an erotic fascination.
Object Transformation
In a sense, most erotic fantasies have to do with transforming someone or something into an object of our desire. Pinup girls and pinup boys function best when they serve as perfectly blank screens on which we can project our own desires and sexual narratives. It’s not about who they really are inside so much as what they can be for us, what role they can fill in our personal drama.
In the fetish world, this focus on objects becomes quite literal. Balloons, shoes, dolls, and stuffed animals can take the place of lovers. They mutely fill their role as personalized props we mould and manipulate in our private erotic theatre. Unlike real people, they don’t talk back, don’t make demands, don’t require high salaries, and don’t have desires and needs that might interfere with our own.
Yet for many people, the ultimate fantasy is to be transformed into a literal sex object. While some robot fans imagine possessing a servile sex-toy, most derive pleasure from becoming one themselves. They enjoy being the object of attention, ceding their will over to their partners who can manipulate and control them at a whim. Being an object frees them from responsibility, from the structures of acceptable human behavior, and allows them to experience their bodies more fully without the interference of the mind.
Robot Fetish
Upon first hearing about the robot fetish, you might assume that this is about sex with mannequins or Real Dolls. For most robot and doll fans, however, it’s all about transforming oneself or one’s lover into a mechanized erotic automaton. They use costumes — preferably silver lycra spandex — as well as monotone voices and jerky motions to playact as literal sex objects. The idea that a person might be forced to perform as a robot and obey its master’s orders is perhaps the most exciting of all.
Robot Fetish is basically Dominance & Submission role-play in a sci-fi guise.
So what fetishes are there?
Well there are lots, to help make this more comprehensive I’ve categorised the fetishes I’ve chosen to write about, into three main groupings, this also aids the explanation of their origins. Read on to stimulate your mind and perhaps you’ll find something you might like to try!
Animal Transformation
Human-into-animal transformation is the stuff of shamanic ritual and children’s fairytales. It’s also one of the core metaphors of two of the most popular niche fetishes around today, PONYPLAY and FURVERTS. In both of these fetishes, people dress up in animal costume and behave like animals. Animal transformation is also one of several overlapping themes of the hybrid fetishes CRUSH FREAKS and VORE, which combine the animal theme with a foot fetish and an oral fetish respectively.
Animal transformation fantasies enable their ‘fans’ to temporarily escape from the often repressive rules of human social behaviour. Animals are free from the human burdens of shame and sin. Pretending to be an animal makes it possible to exist for the pleasure of the moment in a guilt-free, playful way.
Ponyplay
The ponyplay crowd generally gravitates to the BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Sadism and Masochism) scene, because play involves one person taking the dominant human role of “master” “owner” or “trainer” and the other person playing the submissive role of “pet”. Ponyplay equipment has a natural parallel to equipment associated with BDSM: corsets translate into saddles, blindfolds into blinders, high heels into hoofboots, handcuffs into mitts, and buttplugs into ponytails. Many ponyplayers have a leather fetish, and get a special thrill from the odours and textures of their costumes.

Ponyplay may be growing in popularity because the conventional BDSM slave/master metaphor is both too politically incorrect and too historically distant to have any real connection to our lives. While few of us know real slavery (or find the concept sexy,) most people have had some sort of charged childhood contact with “real” equestrian culture and equipment. Women who had a childhood obsession with ponies may grow up to become ponygirls or pony mistresses.
Furverts
The furvert crowd emerged in the 1980s from the worlds of “furry” fandom, a non-sexual fan subculture devoted to cartoon animals from comic books and animated TV shows. The difference between a “furry” fan and a “furvert” is that furverts sexualize their cartoon characters. While outsiders find the combination of cute childhood imagery and sexuality to be disturbing, furverts have no interest in sex with children. This is about “growing up” childhood dreams and fantasies. Furverts might imagine themselves as a cute rabbit inspired by Bugs Bunny or a unicorn from Disney’s Fantasia.
Interestingly, a very high percentage of the furvert scene is comprised of gay men. This is partially because one of the original convention organizers was a gay man who promoted it to the general gay community. There may be other reasons as well: There has long been an affinity between some gay men and Disney animated movies and characters. Creative costuming and performing are more acceptable among men in the gay community than in the straight community.
Vore
Vore fantasies usually involve the erotic scenario of being eaten alive. Although there are a few vore fans who take the role of predator, the most common role is that of prey. It’s a kind of rape fantasy that substitutes oral engulfment for sexual intercourse. Vore fans may act out their fantasies through role-playing, but most often they find satisfaction from sharing their own stories and illustrations with each other.
